Confidence in Interviews

Confidence is one of the things that you can "fake it till you make it."

Anyone can come across looking confident with a little practice, at least as far as their body language is concerned.

But in an interview, you need more than that.

You have to be able to answer questions with confidence also.

So whenever you are asked a question in an interview, consider your answer, and whatever it is, deliver it with confidence... even if you are shaking inside.

A good answer given in a unsure, lame manner will not be appreciated no matter how great the content, just because of the lack of confidence in the deliver.

A bad answer given with confidence will at least show you have confidence in your ability.

What people understand from what you say is only 7% based on the actual words you say.

38% is based on the tone and speed of your voice, and the other 55% on body language.

So, although obviously I am not promoting giving bad or incorrect answers, if you do happen to slip up and not answer a question well, if you at least deliver it with gusto, you have conquered 93% of the hurdle.

My advice therefore is twofold.

One:
  • know as much as you can about the job,
  • only apply for jobs for which you know you have the skills and experience,
  • and before you go to an interview think long and hard about what you have to offer the employer in this job.

Two:
  • practice, practice, practice so you can deliver every answer you give with confidence.
Good luck with your next interview.
